Short version
When I worked at a haunted house as a teenager, the sound effects were LOUD, but never frightening. The missing piece was deep bass, the same thing that makes thunder feel real. Two truly deep subwoofers hidden under a sheet will beat or amplify most visual tricks, and after Halloween you carry them inside and have a real home theater. If you want to skip ahead, here's my list of subwoofers I'd actually buy.
Why Haunted House Sound Is Loud, But Never Scary
I used to work at a haunted house in my teenage years. It was a lot of fun, and sound effects were a big part of it.
The problem is, they were loud and shouty instead of genuinely powerful and frightening.
Loud isn't the issue. Almost ANY basic subwoofer can be loud. And 99% of what's out there is loud but shallow, including commercial movie theaters, concert setups, DJ equipment, and subwoofers that promise depth but don't deliver.
You can hook up a big 15-inch subwoofer from Amazon for $200 or $300, and it'll help. It's better than nothing.
But if you want that powerful, frightening feel, you need DEEP bass. The only thing that was ever missing from my haunted house was the bass.
What Deep Bass Does To a Scare
Everything sounds more realistic with bass, because bass is in real life.
Thunder is the perfect example. It goes deeper than you can hear. But when it's going REAL deep, you FEEL it.
Movies and shows who understand the concept use this all the time. It's infrasonic bass you can barely hear, but it makes you nervous. It generates emotion.
That's the kind of thing you can pull off in a haunted house, a yard display, or just out on your street for trick-or-treaters. Add a light show and music, and it gets even cooler.
Good bass changes everything. It's going to be more effective than a lot of visuals. It's worth considering.
Why Two Subwoofers Beat One
Get two, and keep them matched. This isn't an audiophile luxury. It's just the physics of how bass works.
The impact alone is dramatic. So is clarity, and it basically eliminates dead spots.
Those dead spots are what I call Swiss Cheese Bass. With a single subwoofer, the bass practically disappears in some spots, depending on where you're standing.
Which Subwoofers to Buy for Halloween
You can get away with something small. But if you want to shock people and really frighten them, go with the ported line, matched dual subs, and some heavy-hitting content.
Here's the lineup I'd point you to, always as a matched pair:
- Dual Micro 3000 R|Evolutions: The smallest way in. I haven't heard the new one yet, but I've used the predecessor for other stuff, and it will produce deep sound. It's a much deeper sound than a giant 15" $300 amazon subwoofer. It's just not going to deliver the kind of shocking impact ported SVS subs do.
- Dual PB-1000 Pros: Best on a budget.
- Dual PB-2000 Pros: Best for most rooms. My go-to recommendation.
- Dual PB-3000 R|Evolutions: Best premium pick for the price and size. My "Goldilocks."
- Dual PB-17 Ultra R|Evolutions: Best if money is no object. The best bass I've heard, FULL STOP.
How to Set Up Deep Bass for Halloween
Keep it simple. If you're setting up a sound system and playing scary music, put some good subs in there. Remember to run the gain high enough to sound overdone and then back it down. These can handle a LOT more gain before they sound overdone, but never exceed -6 (0 is all the way up). I usually land around -10 to -15 with dual SVS subs.
If it's just for Halloween, truck them on out there, set them up, and run them. When the night's over, bring them back inside.
You can even hide them. Bass travels well.
After Halloween, it's a real home theater
Here's the best part. After Halloween, you take the subs home, and you've got yourself an amazing sound system.
Put them in your home theater, or an incredible 2 channel system. You can finally hear ALL of the bass in your music and movies, instead of headache inducing, one note, aggravating, unsatisfying, shallow bass.
The difference is undeniable.
Truck the pair out, hide them under a sheet, then carry them back inside to enjoy until next year.
Ready for Deep Bass? Start Here
If you want deep bass in your haunted house this year, and a real home theater after, here's what I'd do:
Start with dual PB-2000 Pros. They're my go-to recommendation. On a tighter budget, go with dual PB-1000 Pros. If money's no object, it's dual PB-17 Ultra R|Evolutions. PB-17's are as potent as it gets, but they ARE NOT EASY to move. This is ultimate haunted house territory, with genuinely insane dedication to being the best.
In the USA, order factory direct through my links, and you're covered by SVS's full Bill of Rights, including the 1 year trade-up. Start small now, and you can move up later.
